Abstrakt

Although ecofeminism has demonstrated significant adaptability and insight in communication research and environmental practice, its potential as an analytical framework has gone underappreciated since its decline in the late 1990s. This study seeks to reaffirm ecofeminism’s relevance by extending cinematic ecocriticism to James Cameron’s film series Avatar. We argue that the films’ rhetorical omissions concerning genders, violence, motherhood, and Indigenous people direct audiences toward issues central to ecofeminist critique. Specifically, the narratives within the franchise regarding these themes reflect a “third space” that oscillates between “uncritical equality” and “uncritical reversal.” As influential as this digital Hollywood blockbuster can be, its stories continue to perpetuate systemic inequalities rooted in patriarchal ideologies, regrettably undermining a post-anthropocentric environmental vision. This study sheds light on an inclusive and critical ecofeminist approach to address contemporary challenges in environmental communication. We contend that through its advocacy for environmental justice and intersectional compatibility, ecofeminism can promote a social justice alliance to facilitate more cross-cultural dialogs across cinematic “green” screens in future.
