Beskrivning av infrastrukturen
The NOT is operated jointly by Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Stockholm University on La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. Since 2020 University of Turku has been the new legal entity behind the telescope and its buildings, and Aarhus University the legal entity behind the NOT staff. The NOT has a vital role for the astronomy and astrophysics research in Finland and is the main facility in many ongoing long-term projects led by the researchers of University of Turku.
Vetenskaplig beskrivning
The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) is a medium-sized telescope operated jointly by Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Stockholm University. Its ownership has been reorganized such that the human resources are handled by the Aarhus University in Denmark, and the telescope and related buildings are owned by University of Turku. The location of the NOT on La Palma, Canary Islands is one of the best in the world for astronomical observations. ??? has advanced instruments allowing imaging and spectroscopy covering both optical (320-1000 nm) and near-infrared (1-2.4 µm) wavelengths and polarimetry. The NOT Transient Explorer (NTE) will be a new high efficiency wide-band spectrograph with much improved capabilities when entering operation in 2023. NOT plays a major role in the Finnish astronomy providing an important access to the targets in the northern sky. NOT is also an efficient educational tool to introduce young people to modern observational astronomy.
