Production of Green Ammonia by Electrochemical Reactors Realized with Additive Manufacturing

Transitioning from a fossil-fueled to a renewable-based economy promises a society free from fossil carbon dependence. Ammonia (NH3) is crucial for fertilizers and industrial chemicals, with potential as an energy storage medium and fuel substitute. Current NH3 production relies on the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process making it unsuitable for decentralized production. Addressing these challenges, Green-AM, a consortium of LUT University and the University of Turku with several collaborators, promotes greener electrochemical NH3 production under milder conditions using renewable energy. This technology enables decentralized NH3 production, reducing political risks and facilitating local energy storage. By enhancing the catalytic surface area of electrodes through advanced materials and 3D-printed structures, and optimizing reactors by modelling and simulation tools, Green-AM seeks to develop reliable and efficient process for further commercialization.
