Ending the message: Unique molecular mechanism of mRNA poly(A) tail formation in yeast and pathogenic fungi
Bidragets beskrivning
To express the genetic information, cells copy the DNA code into another molecule, the messenger RNA (mRNA). In nucleated cells of animals and fungi, one end of the mRNA receives a poly(A) tail that has an essential role in modulating the gene expression. Notably, the process of poly(A) tail formation is different in animals and fungi, thereby making this process a possible target for drug compounds that would selectively inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungal microbes. This research, carried out in the University of Turku, aims to uncover the mechanism of mRNA poly(A) tail formation in yeast and pathogenic fungi. The research will employ tools of gene technology as well as novel biochemical and biophysical assays to monitor the poly(A) tail synthesis at a single molecule level with a time resolution of milliseconds. This investigation will define the molecular basis for a fundamental cellular process and pave the way for developing new urgently needed antifungal compounds.
