Menopause-Associated differences in Transporter Complex HDL's composition and function (MATCH)

Bidragets beskrivning

The major change in endocrine system that aging women confronts is menopause. It leads to estradiol deficiency that has been linked to impairment of cellular respiration, as well as increased metabolic and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is atheroprotective molecule transporting cholesterol from arteries to liver. Paradoxically, both physical activity and menopause are associated with increased HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, yet with menopause, this increment is not protective. This observation warrants studies that are focused on HDL particle composition and HDL functionality rather than level of HDL-C per se. We aim to find novel components of HDL that may change due and regulate HDL's functions eventually affecting whole body metabolic homeostasis. Our study will progress HDL research towards new directions to study HDL's potential in prevention of CVD especially in aging women.
