Abstrakt

This study investigates the application of the ManPas device, a novel farm-based manure pasteurizer, for transforming horse manure and slurry solids into a valuable resource within a circular economy framework. The ManPas technology addresses the twin challenges of limited traditional bedding materials and expensive long-distance manure transport by converting waste into a reusable product. Operational since June 2023, ManPas utilizes heat generated by microbial decomposition to achieve a pasteurization temperature of 70°C, complying with EU hygiene regulations. This process eliminates harmful microorganisms and seeds, enabling the repurposed manure to be employed as bedding, a soil amendment, or a growth medium. The device incorporates automation and sensors to guarantee precise temperature control and treatment duration, optimizing both efficiency and safety. Preliminary findings suggest that ManPas achieves the target temperature with minimal additional energy input, signifying low operational costs. The study emphasizes the significance of manure homogenization and optimal particle size for efficient heat penetration. Initial results demonstrate a substantial reduction in bacterial counts and the eradication of seed germination capabilities during pasteurization. Recognized as a leading practice in European agriculture and forestry, ManPas targets a diverse user base including farmers, livestock keepers, horse farms, growing medium producers, landowners, and researchers. Ongoing investigations explore the device's efficacy with various bedding materials to assess its versatility. Early results indicate its potential for low-cost, energy-efficient manure pasteurization. The successful implementation of ManPas has the potential to revolutionize sustainable farming practices by providing a safe and stable soil amendment, thereby aligning with core circular economy principles.
