Abstrakt

This chapter highlights the significance of intra-city renewable energy production in the green energy transition and sustainable city development. Despite progress made in recent years, the contribution of renewable energy to cities energy needs is limited. This highlights the imperative for deployment of renewables to attain ambitious climate goals. The chapter describes various renewable energy technologies tailored to city environments. The strategic deployment of locally available renewable sources and their deeper integration into decentralized power systems is a vital step towards fostering the transition to low-carbon city and accelerating global efforts to address climate change. The chapter also underscores cities’ growing commitment to prioritize sustainability and resilience and the diverse solutions offered by renewable energy technologies. Furthermore, it discusses the challenges and opportunities in scaling up renewable energy initiatives and achieving a low-carbon and sustainable future through strategic planning, policy support, and collaboration among stakeholders. This chapter concludes by noting significant growth potential for renewable energy generation in global cities. It also alerts the necessity of adopting a holistic approach to accelerate the energy transition towards building a sustainable future and enhancing self-sufficiency of the cities.
