Fish monitoring and fish-based classification of ecological status of lakes and rivers

Startår

2007

Projektmål

The goal of the work is to contribute to the ecological classification of surface waters every six years according to the demands of the WFD. The classification output is utilized by environmental authorities to construct the regional water management plans that contain the list of measures to reach or keep the good status of water bodies. Today, the fish monitoring network includes 260 rivers and 260 lakes. Annually, some 50 rivers and 50 lakes are sampled.

Resultat

Resultat och påverkan

The first classification of Finnish surface waters was completed in 2008. Fish-based assessment of ecological status was made from 232 rivers and 203 lakes. The ecological status was assessed to be worse than good in 41 % of rivers and in 36 % of lakes. The results are needed for planning the measures of water protection as well as for monitoring the impacts of those measures. The results are used by citizens, associations and administration. The government has to report the results to the EU.
