UEF - Natural resources RI

Beskrivning av infrastrukturen

The natural resources research infrastructure brings together multidisciplinary expertise in research related to the environmental responses of forest ecosystems, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and risks of deforestation affecting the abiotic and biotic factors of ecosystems, as well as research related to making products from wood and forest industry process side streams. In the context of research related to aquatic ecosystems, it brings together multidisciplinary expertise in water chemistry, aquatic microbiology, crab biology, aquaculture, ecotoxicology, and research related to aquatic ecology and physiology. In the context of geographical research, it brings together multidisciplinary expertise in research related to, for example, permafrost, land use, socio-ecological issues, river research, hydrogeography, and climate change. The forest and environmental sciences research infrastructure includes a growth chamber complex (Environmental and Biological Sciences/Forest Sciences) and a root research laboratory, which is administered by the Natural Resources Institute Finland under INAR (Joensuu Campus, Borealis). The research infrastructure includes equipment for processing raw materials, and materials and versatile laboratory analytics, which especially include elemental analysis and determination of the properties of wood. A soil research laboratory and greenhouses are also available for experimental activities. The development of water engineering solutions is supported by expertise in (nano) materials science and chemical analysis. Research in forest sciences and geographical research makes versatile use of, for example, aerial photography and remote sensing equipment, software and materials
