Mitochondrial acyl-ACPs in regulation of respiration and metabolism

Bidragets beskrivning

Mitochondria are cell organelles with multiple important roles in cell biology, physiology and biochemistry. Recent research results have indicated that mitochondrial acyl carrier protein ACP with acyl-group is essential for assembly or function of respiratory complexes, synthesis of lipoate and iron-sulfur complexes and mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis (mtFAS) generates the acyl-groups depending on the nutritional status of a cell. Currently, mtFAS is regarded as a sensor and a transmitter from mitochondrial intermediary metabolism to mitochondrial respiration. Precise mechanism how this transmission works is not known. In this project we will study the role of different chain-length acyl-ACPs for mitochondrial and cellular function. We use yeast and human induced pluripotent stem cells as models. Based on the results from this project we will understand how acyl-ACPs regulate mitochondrial and cellular functions.
