Novel targets to activate adipose tissue metabolism for the treatment of obesity
Bidragets beskrivning
We aim to identify mechanisms that can improve adipose tissue energy metabolism to develop new treatments for obesity. While diet-based weight loss strategies often fail to induce lasting results, bariatric surgery is effective in leading to permanent weight loss. Adipose tissue mitochondrial energy metabolism seems to predict weight loss success and bariatric surgery may improve this function. The effects of surgery are largely mediated by changed interactions between gut and tissues and gut hormone -based medications have recently transformed the obesity treatment. We investigate body metabolism, circulating bile acids and gut hormones and adipose tissue energy metabolism after conservative and surgical weight loss in humans. We explore the molecular mechanisms of the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery using human adipose cell cultures and mice undergoing weight loss. We try to find mechanism and compounds to mimic the beneficial effects of surgery for better weight loss.
