Modelling and control of lateral vibrations in multiphase electric machines

Bidragets beskrivning

This project aims to improve the power density, life time, and performance of variable-speed multiphase electric machines. The multiphase drives (having more than three phases) are used in various modern high-power applications, including turbo compressors, electrified ship propulsion, and wind turbines. The critical speed (originating from the lateral vibrations of the rotor shaft) limits the rated speed and thus also the power density in high-power machines. The lateral vibrations may also shorten the lifetime of mechanical components. Interestingly, many multiphase machine topologies are inherently capable to produce lateral force that could be used to mitigate the vibrations. This functionality could be realized by redesigning the control system, with minor additions of hardware. The improved power density and longer life time of multiphase drive systems allow to save manufacturing materials (copper, iron, rare-earth materials) and installation space.
