The project develops collaborative governance for the recovery of the Atlantic salmon population complex of the large Teno river system in the Sápmi, the Sámi homeland area. The project includes developing population-specific, target-based assessment for individual salmon stocks by taking into account the multicultural setting in the Teno river valley and respecting Indigenous knowledge and rights. A population model integrates long-term scientific salmon monitoring data with the Indigenous and local knowledge on the salmon in the large, diversified river system. The shift from a pure fishery management regime to a community-based resource and conservation management implies a change in how traditional Sámi fishing, tourist angling, and other activities are intertwined in management decisions. The project will provide transdisciplinary advice for designing socially robust governance and management practices with an aim of ecological conservation and recovery of the salmon populations.
