Mechanical control of early fate selections in human post-implantation development

Bidragets beskrivning

In embryogenesis, individual cell types arise from a population of undifferentiated cells that sequentially transition to their functional state. In the span of early embryogenesis, the fundamental body plan of an adult is laid out; therefore, this is the period for the emergence of birth defects. Embryogenesis has been studied in flies, worms, and mice. Even though the classical models recapitulate human development to a great extent, there are still differences, such as the early morphological shape of the gastrula. Therefore, this study investigates uses recent organoid models that closely resemble human embryos without the conventional ethical dilemmas. In this project, I will study the role of mechanical forces in regulating cell state transitions using state of the art microscopy and computational tools. This project will elucidate the fundamental properties of human development and help us further understand the mechanisms of miscarriages and congenital disabilities.
