In the EU the number of older people who live alone has risen to one third of the 65+ population. Countries like Finland and Sweden are leading the way with 39,5% and 39,0% respectively, followed closely by Latvia (35,0%) and Germany (33,7%). EQualCare's backbone is the cross-cultural comparison between Finland, Germany, Latvia and Sweden; four countries with a similarly high share (19-21%) of people aged 65+ among the total population. EQaulCare aims to further understanding of, and policy development on, the intersections of digitalisation with intergenerational care work and care relationships of older people living alone, and also to contribute to reducing inequalities through collaboration and co-design in research and policy. EQualCare is interested in care work in a broad sense as digitalisation has brought a significant change to perceived and enacted care relationships in terms of distance and proximity, and new boundary forms between people on- and off-line.
