Thyroid hormones: drivers of life-history variation?

Bidragets beskrivning

Thyroid hormones (THs) are very important for embryonic development, metabolism, and life-history stage transition. Based on this, I propose a novel hypothesis that THs may be a potential driver for the diverse life histories in animals. In this project, I will comparatively analyse the TH data in the blood circulation across many bird species. I expect a generally higher TH level in the blood circulation in migratory species because THs are related to migration. Also, the analyses will reveal differences of the thyroid developmental patterns between species with different developmental modes. Furthermore, using a within-species approach with long-term monitored common terns as a model, I will analyse if blood THs explain variation in the timing of migration and migratory distance and the dynamics of chick growth. This project is expected to identify a new mechanism underlying the evolution of life-history variation.
