MegaSense Smart City

Bidragets beskrivning

MegaSense Smart City is a University of Helsinki driven ecosystem project developing and demonstrating intelligent air quality monitoring as a 4G/5G service. This joint project opens new air quality monitoring and management services and many international business opportunities in urban planning and policy-making interventions. The partners worked together and improved the architecture of smart city air quality monitoring by integrating state-of-the-art with existing technologies to meet the requirements of 5G applications. Key Challenges • Smart cities need digital service infrastructure to improve air quality and quality of living, • However, the cost of air quality monitoring stations are prohibitive and only located in a few streets in the city, • The problem can only be solved by a city-wide dense deployment of low-cost air quality arrays, • This requires intelligent planning tools, new mobile sensing platforms, AI-based data fusion and calibration, and improved data presentation. Project Objectives and Results • Improved the capabilities of air quality sensing at low-cost sensors using 4G/5G infrastructure with business & service innovation, • Improve the spatial representation and provide air pollution hot-spot information at the hyperlocal street level, • Pilot services for city-wide air pollution forecasting, clean air navigation and improved the intervention process of air quality monitoring in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Key Project Characteristics • Highly multi-disciplinary joint R&D project developing 4G/5G services, utilising IoT networks for Smart Cities, • Intelligent sensor network planning, mobile sensing with low-cost sensors, new gas sensing techniques, advanced data fusion and calibration methods, • The project creates 5G novel digital services, business models and ecosystem, • 2-year project started 2019 including 4 companies and 2 research institutes, with project volume of 3 M€ from Business Finland and the companies.
