The thesis, working title “Autism in tension between diagnosis and experience”, explores autistic people's perceptions and experiences of autism, diagnostic processes and various support and rehabilitation services. The data collection was conducted during the first half of 2024. Adults who identify themselves with autism were invited to participate in the study. The invitations were distributed through national and local organisations and social media groups. Data was collected through a) thematic interviews (N=24) and b) a questionnaire (N=107). Both sets deal with the experiences and meanings associated with autism, experiences of diagnostic processes and support and rehabilitation services, and well-being. The collection and processing of the data was supported by a grant from the Finnish Society for Disability Research.
