This dataset is associated with the article: Wenfei Liao, Tommaso Zanca, and Jari Niemelä (2024). “Predation risk modifies habitat use and habitat selection of diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) in an urban pondscape”, published in Global Ecology and Conservation.
This dataset contains four csv files that allow us to investigate how predation risk affects the habitat use and habitat selection of aquatic invertebrates in urban aquatic ecosystems. The file “Dy_Vege_Pond_2018-2020.csv” contains Dytiscidae species richness (the column “DySpeciesRichness”) and abundance (the column “DyAbundance”) data collected in Helsinki urban ponds in May and July 2018 – 2019, part of which was extracted from dataset Liao (2020). The column “Fish” indicates the presence (denoted as “YES”) or absence (“NO”) of fish. The column “VegeCover” contains data of emergent vegetation cover in pond margins at the pond scale, and the column “VegeSpecies” contains the number of species in the pond margins.
The file “Dy_plant_microhabitats.csv” contains Dytiscidae species richness (the column “SpeciesRichness”) and abundance (the column “Abundance”) data collected in four types of microhabitats, i.e. non-vegetated microhabitats “Noplant”, and microhabitats dominated by bulrush, sedges, and common reeds. The column “WaterDepth” contains water depth measured at the centre of each microhabitat.
The file “Body_length_all.csv” contains species-specific body size by calculating the mean of the range of body length for each species from the literature (Nilsson and Holmen, 1995). The column “Species” contains information of the species name of each specimen. All specimens were collected in 2020 from May to July.
The file “Body_length_microhabitats.csv” contains specimens collected in the four types of microhabitats in ponds with fish, mentioned in the file “Dy_plant_microhabitats.csv”. Only two specimens were collected in the microhabitats dominated by common reeds, which were excluded from the data analysis in Liao et al (2024).
