Beyond Weight – Mapping the Medico-Moral Terrain of Youth Obesity Care
Bidragets beskrivning
Adolescent obesity care is shifting towards medical interventions like bariatric surgery and GLP-1 receptor agonist medications (such as Ozempic and Wegovy). While these treatments offer promising clinical outcomes, their use in underage populations raises complex social, cultural, and ethical questions. WEIGHYOUTH investigates how these interventions are reshaping obesity care in Finland. The project explores shifting distribution of responsibilities, cultural obesity narratives, social representations, and ethical concerns. The datasets include: interviews with adolescents, parents, and pediatric endocrinologists, and a national survey,. Analysis methods are relevant qualitative methods and logistic regression. WEIGHYOUTH results support ethically sound, socially responsive, and youth-sensitive healthcare practices in Finland and beyond.
