Modular Bioengineered Matrices for Selective Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from Complex Waste Streams

Bidragets beskrivning

The sMORE project aims to develop a new bio-based method for recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from mining waste. The research combines synthetic biology and hydrometallurgy to create a selective, reusable binding matrix suitable for industrial processes. The matrix is produced by engineered bacteria using sustainable feedstocks and is designed to capture REEs from leachates obtained through chemical and biological extraction. The project is carried out by the research groups at Tampere University and VTT, whose complementary expertise enables the development of a low-energy, environmentally friendly process. The research supports circular economy goals and reduces the environmental impact of critical metal recovery. The results will support the design of future biohybrid technologies for metal recycling and green process industries.
