Between brains and computers: the social (re)construction of ‘intelligence' in the digital economy

Bidragets beskrivning

The project explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neurotechnology reshape ideas of intelligence and how this influences science, business and society. As AI and brain-related technologies rapidly advance, they impact what it means to 'know' and 'think,' raising critical questions about what it means to be human. The research investigates how scientists and companies define ‘intelligence' and how these definitions influence technological and economic practices. Using interviews, quantitative data analysis, and archival research, the study focuses on leading AI and neurotech hubs in the United States and the United Kingdom. By analysing debates among neuroscientists, computer scientists, and businesses, the project will uncover the power dynamics and socioeconomic impacts of different notions of intelligence. Its findings will provide insights into how emerging technologies affect management, control and human interaction, offering new perspectives for social sciences and society
