Drug-resistant childhood-onset epilepsies and disease models for novel drug target discovery (DIAMOND)

Akronym

DIAMOND

Bidragets beskrivning

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classifies epilepsy as a major public health problem. One-third of patients have severe epilepsies, which lead to decreased quality of life and may adversely affect cognitive development, especially in children. There is a significant need to develop treatment options for severe epilepsies. We will combine clinical data and patient-derived disease models to identify previously unknown causes and mechanisms of severe epilepsy. This project will be conducted by the Paediatric Neurology Group from the Oulu University Hospital and University of Oulu and the Epilepsia Helsinki Team from the Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) in collaboration with the University of Helsinki, Finland. We aim to find ways to understand, treat, and prevent severe epilepsy and thus alleviate the high burden of severe epilepsy on individuals and their families and on society.
