Pregnancy and health risks – harnessing genetics for mechanistic understanding
Bidragets beskrivning
Pregnancy profoundly influences later life health of both mothers and their children, yet the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Our project aims to unravel these connections leveraging genetic and healthcare data from over 500,000 Finnish participants from the FinnGen study. In the project, we study pregnancies and the associated health risks through three genetic approaches: We evaluate how women's reproductive behaviour and success jointly with genetic factors impacts future risk of breast cancer and cardiometabolic disease, investigate how maternal health during pregnancy influences child's risk for psychiatric and cardiometabolic diseases, and explore the role of the fetal genome in three maternal pregnancy complications and outcomes. The anticipated outcomes include new knowledge of women's health and disease etiology. This information can guide public health interventions and further experimental studies.
