Intelligent bone – Determinants of osteoporotic fractures

Bidragets beskrivning

Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease. It weakens bones and increases the fracture risk. Traditional bone density measurement predicts fractures only with moderate accuracy. This study aims to improve the assessment of fracture risk caused by osteoporosis. A large dataset of 150,000 patients will be collected to investigate how soft tissue, previous fractures, bone shape and other risk factors affect fracture risk. The study also explores how multiple radiological images and patient medical records can be used to assess fracture risk more accurately using deep neural networks. This project has the potential to enhance fracture risk assessment by using existing imaging technologies. It may have an enormous impact on osteoporotic fracture prevention without increasing costs to the healthcare system. The study is carried out in international collaboration between the Wellbeing services county of North Savo, universities, and industry partners.
