Quantifying the Evolution of Global Permafrost Ecosystem Nitrogen Dynamics (PermNDyn)
Bidragets beskrivning
PermNDyn explores the long-term evolution of ecosystem nitrogen (N) dynamics across the global permafrost region for the period 1850-2300. Permafrost stores vast amounts of N, but warming temperatures threaten to release this N, potentially altering greenhouse gas emissions, plant growth, and climate feedbacks. This project addresses a critical gap in understanding the evolution of permafrost N, which has been less studied than carbon dynamics. Using advanced computational models, supported by extensive observational data from global permafrost regions, the research will quantify changes in N storage, N2O emissions, and their variability under different climate scenarios. The study will be conducted at University of Eastern Finland, supported by collaborations with international research teams. PermNDyn's findings will support sustainable management of permafrost regions, contribute to global climate policies, and improve predictions of ecosystem responses to environmental changes.
