Portable magnetoencephalography with optically pumped magnetometers (PORTAMEG)

Bidragets beskrivning

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive functional neuroimaging technique in which the magnetic fields of active neuron populations in the human brain are detected outside the head. MEG systems are expensive to acquire and include heavy and large equipment such as a magnetically shielded room. In PORTAMEG, I will combine recent advances in quantum magnetometry as well as in magnetic shielding to develop a portable and cost-effective MEG. The project will be conducted at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at Aalto University. The scientific breakthrough of PORTAMEG is in the development of new hardware and software shielding techniques. PORTAMEG will ultimately ‘jail-break' MEG from the MSR and bring it directly to the point of care having a transformative impact on the application of MEG in healthcare. PORTAMEG will enable registration of epileptic patients in hospital bedside and on-the-field assessment of mild traumatic brain injuries.
