From trial-based effectiveness to real-life effectiveness: can we improve the treatment and reduce the burden of upper extremity fractures in the elderly?

Bidragets beskrivning

This project investigates the real-life effectiveness of the proximal humerus and distal radius fracture treatment in older patients and aims to develop a fracture-specific clinical prediction models for functional outcome, quality of life and major medical events using trial data of 1000 patients with proximal humerus or distal radius fractures. A real-life patient cohort with similar fractures is also gathered and analyzed to assess the generalizability of the previous clinical trial results. Results will expand our knowledge from efficacy and effectiveness to real-life effectiveness and improve resource allocation in daily clinical practice in older patients who are frail and at risk for major medical events and hospitalization. Clinical prediction models will further help resource allocation. An assessment of clinical trial generalizability will give a truly new insight into the applicability of the research findings of clinical trials, even those from outside this field.
