Towards a comprehensive understanding of high-energy particle radiation from the Sun through high-fidelity simulations
Akronym
ENERGISE
Bidragets beskrivning
Solar eruptions are the most energetic phenomena that regularly occur in the solar system. During such events, the Sun is capable of filling the interplanetary space with large quantities of magnetized plasma and high-energy particles. The resulting space weather conditions can be hazardous to astronauts as well as space-based technologies such as satellite-based navigation and telecommunication. Our understanding of the processes responsible for generating these extreme conditions remain limited. As a result, constructing reliable models for space weather predictions to protect assets in space remains a major challenge. The goal of this project is to develop and utilize next-generation models that simulate solar eruptions and energetic particles with unprecedented accuracy. This will be achieved by combining, rather than running separately, state-of-the-art models in an innovative way. Powered by HPC resources and methods, this will allow to scrutinize the processes at play.
