Enhanced monitoring of arctic and boreal soils using remote sensing methods in support of carbon cycle science
Bidragets beskrivning
The "Enhanced Monitoring of Arctic and Boreal Soils using Remote Sensing Methods in support of Carbon Cycle Science" project seeks to enhance soil moisture and freeze-thaw monitoring in the Arctic and Boreal regions. These processes are vital for carbon cycle dynamics, impacting photosynthesis and decomposition. Despite progress in low-frequency microwave sensing, challenges persist, particularly with factors like forest canopy and snow cover in cold regions. The study focuses on overcoming these challenges, addressing how forest canopy affects soil condition detection. Detecting frozen soil during snow onset poses challenges, while melting snow in spring hinders direct ground observation. This project aims to overcome existing algorithm limitations for soil moisture and freeze/thaw conditions. Using remote sensing observations and other data from the FMI Sodankylä site, equipped with numerous instruments, the study aims to develop innovative methods.
