A Whole-Body Sleep Architecture Model to Redefine Sleep Stages

Bidragets beskrivning

Sleep is a vital physiological process, compulsory for mental and physical recovery. However, the analytic practices have not evolved, and sleep staging is still restricted to human pattern recognition and 30-second time intervals. This has led to many oversimplifications in the definitions of healthy sleep and in turn, affects the diagnosis and treatment of over one billion afflicted individuals suffering from sleep disorders and their life-threatening consequences. The objective of this project is to establish a robust and fully automated whole-body sleep staging model that merges information from physiological systems and the brain´s electrical activity with high temporal resolution. This can enable comprehensive and clinically relevant evaluation and classification of healthy and diseased sleep. Project is carried out in the University of Eastern Finland in close collaboration with world´s best sleep research institutions in Europe, USA, and Australia.
