Bulk metallic glass composites for green energy transition
Akronym
BMGcomp
Bidragets beskrivning
Carbon neutral mobility requires new types of composite materials to develop more efficient electric and alternative fuel motors to reduce the CO2 emissions. Bulk metal glasses (BMG) are non-crystalline materials, amorphous metals that are exceptionally strong and elastic. Functionalization of BMGs with soft magnetic and solid lubricant particles would enable novel high power-to-weight and self-lubricant composites for green energy conversion solutions. The consortium combines the expertise of Aalto University on design and characterization of bulk metal glasses with the expertise of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. on powder metallurgy in order to develop functionalized BMG composites for electrical and combustion machines. The research deals with challenges in the design, processing and testing of BMG to produce innovative material structures through additive manufacturing against climate change.
