La cathédrale engloutie. The medieval architecture, construction phases and artworks of Turku Cathedral interpreted with new methodologies.
Bidragets beskrivning
Turku Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings of Finland, a national monument, and a testimony of overseas architectural influences of medieval Finland. Though, the medieval construction history, artworks and artefacts of the cathedral have not been researched comprehensively after the 1920s when the cathedral was restored. This project will build up a new holistic picture of the medieval architectural history, artworks and their European background and context of the cathedral through a cross-disciplinary research. The multidisciplinary dimension, that extends from scientific dating methods in archaeology to the analyses of indulgence letters and medieval building account materials, brings answers to questions that have remained open for centuries. The project will also contribute to novel methodological initiatives while it combines historical building information models, scientific analyses and documentary evidence in architectural-historical and art-historical research.
