United Nations sustainable development goal 2 has the dual objectives to achieve food security and promote sustainable agriculture. This should be achieved at the time as rapid urbanization, climate change and biodiversity loss. Plants are exposed to unfavorable conditions including pathogens, extreme temperatures, water availability and air pollutants. Understanding the mechanisms that allows plants to acclimate to unfavorable climatic conditions will be essential to increase crop production. Conventional plant breeding focuses on selecting high-yield varieties, but it can result in reduced genetic diversity and a decrease in stress tolerance. Therefore, it is essential to identify and characterize new regulators of plant stress responses to improve overall plant performance. This project will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of plant defense mechanisms, which can be used in plant breeding to develop traits that are crucial for adapting plants to unfavorable climates.
