From optimal celiac disease diagnostics and follow-up towards better long-term health

Bidragets beskrivning

Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic immune-mediated condition affecting 3% of population most being undiagnosed and predisposed to increased morbidity and mortality. Screening could improve the case finding, but especially its cost-effectiveness is unclear. Treatment, gluten-free diet, may impair quality of life and evidence is lacking about the best follow-up methods. Aim of the study is to evaluate screening, diagnostics, and follow-up of CeD in healthcare, their significance for treatment outcomes, and utility of fecal markers in every step. Study is conducted in Tampere Celiac Disease Research Center. Wide collaboration enables model and method development, and use of different materials including registry- and questionnaire-based studies, birth cohorts and prospective studies. Results could be used to improve current practices and patients' treatment success, health, and quality of life. Non-invasive tools would benefit the patients, clinical practice, and research.
