Shared heritability of nasal polyps and astma in Finnish biobanks
Bidragets beskrivning
In around 2-4 % of the population, polypous growths can be found in the nasal cavities, associating with recurring and chronic nasal congestion and rhinosinusitis. Co-occurrence of nasal polyps with asthma often leads to treatment resistance for both. Nasal polyps and asthma are known to have partially overlapping inflammatory and heritable etiologies, but also differences in these. Large biobank-scale investigations have shown shared heritable gene variants. Using state-of-the-art statistical applications, we have been able to disentangle shared gene variants from disease-specific ones, enabling investigation of both shared and disease-specific mechanisms. Studying the backgrounds of these chronic airway inflammatory diseases can greatly increase our understanding of the origin of persistent inflammation.
