A real-time biofeedback intervention for improving tibiofemoral cartilage quality in older adults
Bidragets beskrivning
Osteoarthritis is a common condition that causes pain and limits mobility. It causes a significant burden to society due to its direct and indirect costs. The risk of developing osteoarthritis increases with age, and as the population ages, the prevalence of this disease is expected to rise. Therefore, we must find ways to prevent the disease or slow its progression. To address this issue, the project, conducted at the University of Eastern Finland, along with national and international partners, explores the potential of using real-time feedback based on biosignals to positively influence the health of the articular cartilage by modifying the loads imposed on the knee. This research seeks to increase our understanding of how aging cartilage responds to changes in its loading. The research results will also give applicable knowledge on potential strategies to modify joint loading. This knowledge helps develop ways to slow down disease progression and treat joint pain.
