Towards CO2-lean electric arc furnace steelmaking through fundamental and data-driven mathematical modeling

Bidragets beskrivning

The European Union has issued a target of CO2-free steel production by 2040. The CO2 emissions of steel produced from scrap using the electric arc furnace are much lower than those of steel produced from iron ore using the blast furnace - converter route. However, the high electricity consumption of the electric arc furnace process needs to be reduced to avoid CO2 emissions associated with electricity production. The prediction of the electric arc furnace process is conducted with mathematical models. Contemporary models typically do not adapt to changes in process practice and are not applicable for real-time prediction of the process. This project aims to develop a model that adapts automatically to plant data, is capable of online modeling, and makes use of new online measurements. The results of the project are expected to make the electric arc furnace steelmaking economically more attractive in comparison to the CO2-intensive blast furnace route.
