Optimising and characterising refractory alloys with machine-learning interatomic potentials (OCRAMLIP)
Bidragets beskrivning
Medium- and high-entropy alloys are new classes of materials that contain multiple metallic elements in significant concentrations. This results in alloys with unique mechanical and high-temperature properties with possible applications in future fusion and fission reactors. However, most previous research has focused on alloys with nearly identical concentrations of each element, leaving huge parts of the theoretical composition space unexplored and the possibility of optimal alloy compositions yet to be discovered. In the OCRAMLIP project, we will do a computational search and discovery for promising refractory alloys in the Mo-Nb-Ta-V-W, Cr-Ta-V-W, and Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr families by developing accurate and fast machine-learning models for the interatomic interactions. The research will be carried out at the University of Helsinki with international and national collaborations combining theory, simulations, and experiments of strength, ductility, and diffusion in refractory alloys.
