Hiphop Youth in Finland: Conviviality, Ethnicity and Identification
Bidragets beskrivning
This project explores 1) ethnicities and identities of young fans and 2) how they draw on hip hop culture as affording them a sense and experience of conviviality, in the predominantly white but diversifying Finnish society. Rap music is known to have significance for many young people but the fan perspective still requires more research, especially in Finland. This study focuses on white and ethnic minority (black, brown, Sámi and Roma) youth. The research is done in physical (Helsinki, Jyväskylä and Inari) and digital (social media) contexts. The data include a survey, interviews and field (self-)observations. This study contributes to a new understanding 1) of the role of hip hop, a highly globalized and appealing youth culture, in constructing conviviality and 2) its relation to multiple, intertwining identities and ethnicities. Societally, the study advances the equity of both ‘old' and ‘new' ethnic minorities and, in general, advocates a more inclusive and participatory society.
