Peatlands are an important source of the greenhouse gas methane. Peatland soils host both methane-producing and methane-consuming microorganisms. Measurements of how methane production and consumption each varies in time and space are important for predicting the role of peatlands in a future, warmer climate system. In project MeMO², we will develop a new method to measure methane production and consumption, deploy it to quantify methane dynamics in a peatland warming and a peatland restoration experiment, and use the data from these measurements to improve current models of methane emissions from peatlands.
