Sharpening the image of the interplay between cloud top dynamics and microphysics
Bidragets beskrivning
The impacts of aerosols on cloud properties comprise one of the largest sources of uncertainty in estimates of anthropogenic climate change. Measuring the key physical processes separately is difficult, and representing the aerosol-cloud interactions in current climate models is highly challenging due to the poor spatial resolution of the models. This project proposes a bottom-up approach to tackle these problems by employing novel holographic imaging methods to measure cloud microphysical properties and their spatial variability down to a centimeter scale. Beyond, cutting edge aerosol-cloud-precipitation modelling tools will be used to support the analysis of observational data. The project will give recommendations for the improvement of global scale modelling tools or satellite retrievals.
