Asteroids In the Deep: Characterisation of Sub-Surface of Near-Earth Asteroids, the Moon, and Mercury using radar observations
Bidragets beskrivning
The main goal of the proposed project is to improve our understanding of surfaces and sub-surfaces of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), the Moon, and Mercury by analysing primarily radar data while using data obtained at other wavelengths for validation. I derive dielectric properties of asteroids directly from the radar observations and investigate how observations at different wavelengths are related to each other, which gives insight to the mineralogical and structural composition at different depths. In addition, I will develop numerical radar scattering models to investigate the physical properties of the regolith on NEAs, the Moon, and Mercury and for advanced tools in interpreting both ground- and space-based radar observations. These tools and information support NEA formation and evolution research and are crucial for developing impact risk mitigation technologies, preventing problems during expensive spacecraft missions, and for exploring possible resource utilisation in space.
