The role of bacteriophages in the infant gut microbiome assembly

The human gut microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms, including bacteriophages (phages) - viruses specific to bacteria. This project will quantify and characterize vertical mother-to-infant gut phage transmission. We will also investigate the role of phages in the gut microbiome development in infancy. We will analyze gut phages from stool samples of Finnish mother-infant dyads and develop new computational methods to investigate phage-bacteria interactions from DNA sequencing data.
