Development and in operando characterization of solid redox boosters for high energy density redox flow batteries (redoxSolid Flow)

Bidragets beskrivning

This Project will develop cheaper and more efficient batteries for large scale energy storage, as well as new methodology to characterize charging and discharging of solid battery materials in operando, i.e. under operating conditions, for example by utilizing x-ray based techniques. The project aims to decrease the price of the electricity storage to facilitate the transition from fossil fuel based electricity production to more environmentally friendly electricity generation based on intermittent resources like wind and solar power. Additionally, developing novel techniques for materials characterization under operation conditions allows determining how the batteries operate, and why they fail. This knowledge will focus the research towards solving critical issues, to obtain more stable batteries lasting for tens of years. The research will be performed in collaboration with Aalto University and University of Helsinki, as well as with Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY at Germany.
