Wireless capsule Endoscope electronics for Improved Reliability of Diagnosis in digestive tracts (WEIRD)

In this project, radically improved capsule endoscope electronics will be developed and demonstrated with the goal to realize better diagnostic yield. Capsule endoscopes have gained popularity for inspecting the digestive tract mainly because of its low invasiveness to the patient. The present challenge of the capsule endoscope is its limited diagnostic reliability. The limited reliability is attributed to 1) limited field-of-view (FOV) by the camera in the capsule, 2) limited capacity of the wireless data transfer from the capsule to outside the body, and finally 3) limited capacity of the battery to support the various needed functionalities in the capsule. To resolve this challenge, we propose new radio-frequency and optical components and associated functionalities of a capsule that lead to radically improved diagnostic yield.
