Regulatory networks in stress-induced plant ageing

Bidragets beskrivning

Stress-induced plant ageing can significantly deteriorate the quality of vegetables and cause significant losses in the food chain. The properties and spoilage of ageing plants during shelf life in the supermarket have become relatively well documented, but the underlying biochemical processes remain poorly understood. We propose to fill this knowledge gap by addressing the molecular mechanisms behind stress-induced ageing in model and crop species. We will take advantage of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and various genetic and biochemical methods to study the basic molecular mechanisms of ageing. The new understanding will be tested in different varieties of kale (Brassica oleracea convar acephala), which as a nutritious leafy vegetable is a relevant crop species. The results of this project will help improving the post-harvest quality of leafy greens.
