ICT-Solutions to Understand Variability of Arctic Climate

Akronym

ICT-SUNVAC

Bidragets beskrivning

Electron precipitation does not only create vivid auroral displays, but it also produces atmospheric odd nitrogen (NOx), acting as a catalyst destroying polar ozone. Due to insufficient description of auroral electrons, climate models underestimate ozone impact leading to unsatisfactory representation of arctic climate physics. Together with our Business collaboration partner CSC - IT Center for Science Ltd, we will develop an innovative ICT solution based on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), which will reduce uncertainties related to the natural variability of the arctic climate. Using satellite observations, we develop a model-augmented data set to determine the impact of auroral electrons to middle atmospheric NOx and ozone. GPU technology represents a paradigm change within high-performance computing (HPC). The developed GPU algorithms improve the return of the Finnish HPC investments. Together with CSC we will improve the Finnish international position within HPC programming.
