Interfacial engineering of semiconductors for highly selective light-driven chemical transformations

Bidragets beskrivning

The aim in the project is to study solar driven photo(electro)catalysis on semiconducting surfaces. Light-driven catalytic processes at semiconductors can be more selective than electrocatalytic processes at metallic electrodes. The chemoselectivity of photocatalytic reactions can be influenced by many factors that will be studied. The aim is to fabricate well-defined surfaces and interfaces by atomic layer deposition (ALD) and to investigate the mechanistic factors governing the selectivity by a combination of photoelectrochemical and surface science methods, and theoretical calculations. The project consists of four partners. The group of Prof. Radim Beránek (Ulm) has expertise in photoelectrocatalysis, Prof. Wojciech Macyk group (Kraków) has focused on photocatalysis and spectroscopic studies and Prof. Timo Jacob (Ulm) will support the investigations by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy and calculations. The group at University of Helsinki is one of the world-leading teams in ALD.
