Residual cardiovascular risk: Identification of high-risk individuals
Bidragets beskrivning
Atherosclerosis is initiated by local inflammation in the arterial wall, which is induced by accumulation, modification, and aggregation of LDL particles. We have now developed a test that can be used to assess the aggregation-propensity of LDL particles. The present projects are designed to analyze whether our test improves the predictive power of conventional risk markers of cardiovascular disease. We will also examine how dyslipidemia associated with metabolic syndrome influences LDL aggregation. For this purpose, we will develop a unique mouse model that will allow us to study the link between metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis. We will also examine whether LDL aggregation can be inhibited by omega-3-fatty acids. We expect that the results will provide new mechanistic insight to the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Moreover, in the best case scenario, the results will lead to improved assessment of cardiovascular risk.
